What Does the Ethical Dilemma of Big Tech Reflect About Tax Responsibility?

Meta has experienced much controversy over the years. The platform has had issues with misinformation, enabling harmful behavior, and mishandling user data. Recently, ethical concerns emerged around younger users and their mental health, as Meta’s algorithms can be quite addictive. Meta, as a leader in digital innovation, holds substantial responsibility for shaping our digital world.

The Francis Haugen Whistleblower Revelation: Profits Over People

One of the most significant challenges Meta has faced recently came from Frances Haugen, a former product manager at Facebook. In 2021, Haugen leaked internal documents to the press, providing a rare glimpse into the company's internal practices. These documents revealed Facebook's awareness of its adverse effects on teenage girls’ self-image and mental health. Despite being aware of these issues, Facebook reportedly chose to prioritize profits over users’ well-being. Haugen’s revelations painted a picture of a company that, while fully aware of its impact on young users, did not take meaningful actions to mitigate these harms.

This failure to address the negative impact of its algorithms was not an isolated incident. Instead, it reflects a broader failure within the company to tackle ethical concerns proactively, which has led to widespread harm to its users. Ultimately, Haugen felt compelled to testify before the U.S. Senate to push for protective measures for platform users, especially minors.

The Legal Landscape

This situation has evolved from being just an ethical concern to a question of legal accountability. In 2023, state attorneys general filed lawsuits against Meta, accusing the company of knowingly allowing addictive algorithms that harm younger people’s mental health. The case highlights a growing concern about the role big tech companies play in the lives of younger generations. As people grow up surrounded by digital platforms, there are hopes that these companies will prioritize the mental well-being of users over profits. However, critics argue that Meta’s reliance on dopamine-driven cycles of likes, comments, and shares may be leading users, particularly teens, into a cycle of dependence and insecurity.

Meta has tried to show its commitment to user safety by implementing design changes aimed at protecting younger users. However, critics argue that these steps are insufficient and often come only after significant public pressure. Meta has called for industry-wide collaboration on establishing clear guidelines for protecting minors online. However, some critics view this as an attempt to deflect responsibility rather than take meaningful action.

The Need for Ethical Leadership in Big Tech

These issues highlight a broader problem within Meta: while the company may excel in innovation and research, it has been slow to implement safeguards to protect users. Ethical leadership should drive efforts to protect users’ well-being, especially in an industry that affects millions daily.

Recently, the European Union’s Digital Services Act demanded greater transparency from Facebook regarding its algorithms and harmful content on its platforms. This move underscores the need for a more active role from companies in addressing these issues. While these recommendations are steps in the right direction, they mark only the beginning of what should be a larger movement toward holding tech giants accountable for their impact on users.

Balancing Innovation with Ethical Responsibility

A company as influential as Meta must balance its entrepreneurial freedom with its ethical responsibilities on a global scale, setting standards for smaller tech firms. While innovation is essential, it should not come at the cost of user safety. Prioritizing engagement over mental health reflects a profit-driven approach that can have severe implications. Meta's history of mishandling sensitive data, as seen in scandals like Cambridge Analytica, further demonstrates the need for proactive ethical approaches, particularly regarding data privacy.

Conclusion: The Need for Industry-Wide Ethical Standards

Meta's ethical dilemmas over the years underscore the need for heightened responsibility, especially concerning younger users. The primary issue appears to be a failure to prioritize users’ mental health in an industry that thrives on user engagement without reciprocal communication. As the digital landscape continues to evolve, it is essential for big tech companies to collaborate on establishing clear safety and ethical protocols. This industry-wide commitment would help create a safer, more trustworthy digital ecosystem that ultimately benefits society as a whole.

  1. The concept of the mental health of users becoming tied to their social media presence is unfortunate. Are there any other major targets of this phenomenon aside from teenage girls, maybe in a sense outside of self consciousness?

    1. I think mental health is a concern we all share, particularly as young people try to discover themselves while being exposed to social media and its high expectations. Younger users tend to be the most affected, but in reality, social media influences all of us, often making us more self-conscious by constantly presenting idealized images of others, which aren’t necessarily accurate. We’re bombarded by edited images, and while some people might recognize the editing, it’s not always obvious to everyone. Social media also tends to create somewhat addictive behaviors, as users seek constant engagement. This can lead to anxiety, loneliness, and a distorted sense of reality, as users become engrossed in online interactions that lack the same fulfillment as real-life connections.

If we look further, social media influencers face their own struggles with the pressure to always appear perfect. Constant attention may feel rewarding, but it also creates a sense that their self-worth is tied to their online presence and engagement metrics. This makes it harder for them to navigate life changes. I believe companies like Meta should implement policies to create a safer online environment, regardless of users’ age or insecurities.

    1. That is very true. I think that this will also help us when META launches more products regarding the metaverse as they have invested a lot of money into the industry.

  3. How do you feel platforms like Meta impact young people, particularly who have existed only in the era of social media, as opposed to older demographics that grew up prior to widespread social media? Having fallen firmly in the middle-group, I have a hard time deciphering a clear pattern amongst myself and my peers but I think it may be more discernable when looking at generations that didn't grow up at the same time as Meta.

  4. I agree with what you said about it being essential for big tech companies to collaborate on establishing clear safety and ethical protocols, to be able to navigate such a big industry. It would benefit not only these companies, by retaining customers, and expanding their market, but as you said it will benefit society as whole.

  5. Having to hold a balance between these two very differing aspects must be challenging. This could bring on many unasked questions before. Do you have any suggestions on how to make this task easier, or who we could bring in? I also think it was a great idea to touch base on how to reassure a safer future with progressing technology!

    1. I think that if this could be realistically proposed to META there would need to be a realistic graph in the difference in cost between META remaining the same or changing taking into account the very potential lawsuits in its future if it decides to remain in the same path.
